Renting a Car Without a Credit Card: Which Countries Allow It

Country-by-country guide to renting a car without a credit card: where debit cards are accepted, which suppliers allow it, what deposit you can expect and where a credit card is essential.

Person paying at a car rental counter with a debit card

Whether a debit card works for a rental car depends entirely on where you are travelling. Spain is flexible. Italy is strict. The USA is almost always credit-card-only. The table below covers the main markets for European and US tourists with a country-by-country breakdown.

What changes when you pay with a debit card

Even where a debit card is accepted, the rental conditions are different:

Higher deposit hold. The amount blocked on your card is typically larger than the credit card equivalent. If a credit card hold is €600, a debit card may require €1,000 to €1,500. Confirm the exact amount before booking — it is in the rate conditions.

Full prepayment sometimes required. Some suppliers accept a debit card only if the full rental cost is paid upfront at booking, with no refund on cancellation. The deposit hold is then on top of that.

Fewer available car categories. Luxury, premium and large categories are often restricted to credit card holders regardless of other conditions.

Bank processing time. Debit card holds take longer to release after the rental ends than credit card holds. Expect 5 to 10 working days for the block to clear, depending on the bank.

Cards that do not work

These card types are refused by almost all rental suppliers worldwide:

  • Prepaid cards (including prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards)
  • Revolut and Wise (treated as prepaid debit)
  • Virtual cards (no physical card = no acceptance at counter)
  • PayPal debit cards
  • Cards not in the main driver’s name

If you have a Revolut account, the card may work in your home country’s banking apps but will be declined at car rental counters in almost every market. This catches many younger travellers by surprise.

The USA: a separate case

The US market operates differently from Europe. Credit card use is near-mandatory at major companies:

  • Enterprise: debit accepted at select locations, but requires proof of return flight, utility bill, and a deposit hold that can exceed $300 above the rental cost
  • All other major companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National): credit card required as standard

If you are travelling to the USA without a credit card, open a basic credit card before the trip — even a low-limit one. The car rental counter is not the place to discover that your debit card is refused.

Practical checklist before booking with a debit card

Before completing any reservation with a debit card:

  1. Read the “Payment” or “Accepted cards” section in the rate conditions
  2. Confirm the exact deposit hold amount
  3. Verify your card balance can cover: deposit + rental cost + estimated travel spending
  4. Check whether full prepayment is required (affects cancellation)
  5. Confirm whether your specific card type (Visa Debit, Maestro, Mastercard Debit) is listed as accepted

Frequently asked questions

Which countries allow car rental with a debit card?
Spain and Portugal have the most flexible policies, with many local agencies and some international companies accepting debit cards. The UK, Germany and the Netherlands also allow debit cards at select suppliers. The USA, Italy and France are the most restrictive.
How much higher is the deposit with a debit card?
Typically 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than the credit card deposit. If the standard credit card hold is €500, a debit card may require €1,000 to €1,500 blocked on the account. Some suppliers require full rental prepayment as well.
Does Revolut or Wise count as a credit card?
No. Revolut, Wise and similar fintech cards are treated as prepaid debit cards by almost all rental suppliers. They are usually not accepted for the security hold, even where standard debit cards are accepted.
Can I rent a car in the USA without a credit card?
Rarely. Most US rental companies require a physical credit card in the driver's name. Enterprise allows debit cards at some locations with a very large deposit hold and additional restrictions. Most other major US companies do not accept debit.
What is the safest approach if I only have a debit card?
Book with a supplier that explicitly lists debit card acceptance in their rate conditions, confirm the deposit amount before booking, and ensure your account has the full hold amount available plus trip spending money.
