Why renting a car in Morocco is worth it

Morocco rewards drivers more than almost anywhere in North Africa. Trains link the big cities along the coast and the CTM and Supratours buses cover the rest, but neither gets you to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at sunrise, into the kasbahs of the Draa Valley, or along the back roads to the Ouzoud Waterfalls. Casablanca, the country's economic hub, sits on the Atlantic coast with the international airport Mohammed V as many visitors' first stop, while Marrakech, roughly three hours south, is the classic gateway to the High Atlas and the Sahara road. Between the two, and beyond them, is where a hire car earns its keep.

Distances are manageable and fuel is cheap by European standards, so a two-week loop from Casablanca down through Marrakech, over the mountains to Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley, then back via the Atlantic coast at Essaouira is a realistic and popular route. Add the medieval medina of Fes, the blue-washed lanes of Chefchaouen in the Rif mountains, or the Sahara dunes near Merzouga, and a car turns Morocco from a single-city stopover into a genuine road trip across a country that changes character every few hours of driving.

What to know before you drive in Morocco

  • Morocco drives on the right. Speed limits are generally 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads and 60 km/h in urban areas. Police checkpoints and radar are common on main routes, so keep your licence and rental papers within reach at all times.
  • Fly into Casablanca or Marrakech. Most hire cars are collected at Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport (CMN), the country's main international gateway, or at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), the more popular choice for a first trip into the Atlas and the south. Pick up wherever you land and start driving straight away.
  • Mountain roads require attention. The Tizi n'Tichka pass between Marrakech and Ouarzazate is paved but narrow with sharp bends, and shared by buses and lorries. In winter (December–February), snow can close high passes, so check conditions before setting out and allow extra time on any mountain route.
  • Choose the right car for your route. A standard saloon handles the motorways and main routes between cities without issue. For piste tracks near Aït Benhaddou, remote kasbahs, or the Sahara edges beyond Zagora and Merzouga, a 4x4 is strongly recommended.
  • Fuel is affordable, tolls apply on motorways. The A3 and A7 motorways linking Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech are toll roads but fast and well maintained. Fill up before heading into the mountains or south toward the desert, where stations thin out fast.
  • Cross-border travel is rarely permitted in standard Moroccan rental contracts. Confirm your planned route at booking if it takes you anywhere near a border. Compare Morocco car hire prices →

Where to pick up your hire car in Morocco

Most visitors collect at Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport (CMN) or Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), with city-centre offices in both cities and in Fes also available.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Morocco?
Yes, for most trips. Trains and buses cover the main cities well, but the Atlas Mountains, the Draa Valley kasbahs, Chefchaouen and the Sahara routes near Merzouga are either poorly served or not reachable at all by public transport. A car turns these into comfortable day trips or a proper road trip, usually for less than a string of organised tours.
Should I fly into Casablanca or Marrakech?
Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport is the country's main international hub and puts you closest to Rabat and the Atlantic coast. Marrakech is the more common choice for a first Morocco trip, since it sits right at the foot of the High Atlas and the road south to Ouarzazate and the desert. Many visitors fly into one and out of the other.
Do I need a 4x4 in Morocco?
Not for the main routes. Motorways and main roads between Casablanca, Marrakech and Fes are all paved and manageable in a standard saloon. For piste tracks near Aït Benhaddou, the remote Draa Valley, or the Sahara edges near Merzouga and Zagora, a 4x4 SUV is recommended.
How long is the drive from Casablanca to Marrakech?
About 240 km via the A7 motorway, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic around each city. It's a toll road, fast and well surfaced throughout, and one of the most-driven routes in the country.
Is driving in Morocco safe?
Yes, on main routes. The main things to watch are other drivers overtaking on bends, unexpected stops, and livestock on secondary rural roads. Drive defensively, avoid mountain passes after dark, and keep your documents to hand for the routine police checkpoints on main highways.
Which car hire companies can I compare in Morocco?
We bring together trusted local agencies with international rental brands operating at Casablanca and Marrakech airports. Rather than assume a global giant is present everywhere, our search shows you what's actually bookable for your dates and route. Compare Morocco car hire prices →
